Selma artists Vicky Stoudenmire and Kristopher Johnson took top honors in the 9th annual ArtsRevive Juried Art Exhibition held March 18-20. Their oil painting, “Pancakes,” won Best of Show.
The painting depicts a life-draining, in-the-kitchen collapse of a 1950’s woman who was trying to be the perfect housewife. The artists placed a reprint of the 1955 “Good Wife Guide,” at the base of the painting. It is said to have been published in a 1955 magazine.
“The Dance,” a drawing of a horse and rider by Selmian Cindy Stoudenmire, received the People’s Choice Award. Show patrons voted on their favorite art work from Friday’s opening reception through the end of the show on Sunday.
The show, which features Alabama artists, was the first event held in the revitalized Carneal Building. The former automotive service shop that was built next to the Alabama River in the 1920s, closed in 2008 and was purchased by ArtsRevive to become the organization’s headquarters. It will be used as an art gallery, workshop and meeting/reception space.
